Nutritional Sciences Alumni John Crist and Megan Schmidt Featured Speakers for the Oklahoma Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition

Published: Tuesday, November 12, 2019

OUHSC alumni John Crist and Dr. Megan Schmidt visited their alma mater on November 4 as featured speakers at the annual meeting of the Oklahoma Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (OkSPEN, Oklahoma's local chapter of the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition).

Since graduating from the Coordinated Program in 2013, John's desire to improve the way healthcare is delivered, especially to the under-served, led him to pursue a career in administration. He also completed a Master's degree in healthcare administration and now works an Internal Innovation Consultant at Allina Health, a 12-hospital system based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. John presented "Advocating for Dietetics Inside the Health System--Speaking the Language of Administration."

Since also graduating in 2013 from the Coordinated Program, Dr. Megan Schmidt worked as a dietitian before beginning medical school at the University of North Dakota. She completed medical school in 2018, and is now a family medicine resident at the Allina Health United Family Medicine Residency in St. Paul, Minnesota. Her presentation was, "RD to MD--Primary Care Cases Through a Dietitian's Eyes."

After presenting at the OkSPEN meeting, John and Megan had a special mentoring lunch with current dietetics students, along with visiting their former stomping grounds and visiting their former faculty and now friends.
