MIRS Alumni Spotlight

Describe your career and current position, role and responsibilities.
I started at Midwest Regional Medical Center doing MRI for 2 years, moved to Moore Medical Center where I did MRI, CT, and X-Ray for 3 years, and now I’m PACS Administrator for the entire Norman Regional Health System.

Describe your personal life, family, hobbies, interests.
I have been married for 16 years and we have 2 beautiful princesses: 16 and 11. We are big foodies and I’ve recently taken up woodworking as a hobby. We stay active with our church and the state Homeschool group.

What are you most proud of professionally and personally?
Professionally it has been great to be able to bridge the gap between Radiology and HIT. My ability to explain how one side works to the other has been a huge benefit in my job. Personally my daughters are growing up to be amazing women and I’m very proud of them and who they are becoming.

How has your education from the Department of Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences (formally Radiologic Technology) impacted your career?
I have a general understanding of every modality so it helped immensely when I first started working in PACS. Also the connections that I made with other people in school have been key in getting me to where I am today.

Briefly describe a special memory from when you were a student in the program.
I remember running downstairs between classes to squeeze in a game of ping pong with Brad, Chris, and Hieu. We played a lot of ping pong.

What would you like prospective students to know before they select a career in your profession &/or any healthcare career?
There will be hard days and hard patients, but you will play an important part in helping people get better and that is a great feeling.

Given what you know now, is there anything you would do differently if you were just starting your healthcare career?
Spend money on comfortable shoes. It took me around 5 years before I stopped buying cheap shoes. We are on our feet all of the time and it makes a big difference in how you feel at the end of the day.

Is there anything else you want us to know about yourself?
Every professional move that I made from when I got out of school until now was a direct result of the relationships I had with people I met in school or at work. I know we were told in school
