Clinical/Research Interests:

Dr. Hord supervises a research program that focuses dietary nitrate and nitrite in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular and skeletal disorders that are associated with endothelial nitric oxide (NO) deficiency. Dietary nitrate and nitrite contribute to endogenous NO production from nitrate-nitrite-NO pathway; this pathway presents new opportunities to prevent and treat hypertension and other conditions related to atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. In this context, foods rich in nitrate and nitrite may been demonstrated to be effective for blood pressure lowering, stabilization of atherosclerotic plaques and improve athletic performance in adults.
