Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear Medicine is the profession that utilizes radiopharmaceuticals, scintillation cameras and computers to image and quantify various physiologic processes throughout the body. The nuclear medicine technologist administers radiopharmaceuticals to patients, positions them for images and operates the cameras and computers to produce the images and analyze the data. They have a detailed knowledge of radiation safety procedures, regulations and nuclear pharmacy. The images and data technologists obtain provide physicians with information on injuries and disease processes affecting organ function. In hospital and clinical settings, nuclear medicine technologists perform general, cardiac, and oncologic procedures on adult and pediatric patients

Our Mission

The Department Empowers Life by:

  • Educating students to be competent, professional, entry-level practitioners capable of assuming leadership roles in Radiography, Nuclear Medicine, Radiation Therapy, Diagnostic Medical Sonography, or Medical Dosimetry.
  • Educating imaging and therapy professionals through higher education, advanced continuing education and career advancement.
  • Promoting student and graduate participation in scholarly activity and policy development that enhances the educational process, the professions and health care.
  • Promoting student and graduate service opportunities to the University, the community and the professions that contribute to enhancing overall patient care. (Updated 2015-2020)

Effectiveness Data

  • Graduate outcomes are indicators of program effectiveness, demonstrating the extent to which a program achieves its goals.  Programmatic graduate outcomes data reported on the JRCNMT website include: 5-year time period of current report; graduation rate; ARRT credentialing success; NMTCB credentialing success and job placement rate.

Program Goals

The goals for the Nuclear Medicine program in the Department of Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences are to:  

  • Provide an academic and clinical environment which leads to:
    • Student development of clinical skills and competence appropriate to an entry-level practitioner.
    • Student demonstration of effective communication with other health care practitioners.
    • Student application of effective critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
    • Student scholarly activity within the professions.
  • Provide avenues for involvement in student governance, service to the University, the community, and profession that promote:
    • Student appreciation of lifelong learning.
    • Student leadership positions within the professions and medical community.
  • Provide didactic and clinical experiences that lead to research and scholarship opportunities.
