Developmental Disabilities/School Based Therapy

The Developmental Disabilities and School-based Therapy Research is led by Lynn Jeffries, PT, DPT, PhD, both from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, Department of Rehabilitation Sciences. Dr. Jeffries engages in and supports individual and interprofessional research and its knowledge translation of individuals who have developmental disabilities and students with disabilities who receive school-based physical therapy and related services.

Purpose

  • Support individuals with disabilities from birth to young adulthood, and their families, through evidence-based research and knowledge translation.
  • Provide clinical research for professionals and stakeholders who serve individuals with disabilities, to improve service delivery. 
  • Enhance and inform school-based physical therapy and related service delivery
  • Inform policy for individuals with disabilities through research and implementation

Knowledge Translation in School-based Physical Therapy

  • The purpose of this study is to determine the extent to which physical therapists’ in educational settings use evidence-based intervention, their perceptions of their skills in doing so and identify their perceived barriers to and facilitators of the implement

  • School-based occupational therapists and physical therapists are expected to measure the effectiveness of their student interventions
  • No tool currently exists to measure outcomes of all students with disabilities ages 3-21 years
  • The SOM stands poised, as a national minimal data set, to capture and measure those student outcomes.

  • The purpose of the Move & PLAY study was to follow 430 children from the United Stated and Canada over a year to gain an understanding of factors associated with motor function, self-care, participation, and play of young children with cerebral palsy. 
  • Results provide physical therapists and families of children with cerebral palsy evidenced-based factors that contribute to the children outcomes. 

On Track

On Track

  • OnTrack was a large multi-site study that described the changes in balance, range of motion limitations, strength and endurance, number and impact of health conditions, and participation in self-care, recreation, and leisure activities over a one-year period in children with cerebral palsy. 
  • Longitudinal Trajectory and Reference Centiles were developed for each area described above. 

PT Counts

PT Counts

  • The purpose of the PT COUNTS study was to identify the malleable factors associated with achievement of educational and functional outcomes by students with disabilities, age 5 to 12 years, receiving school-based physical therapy.
  • The School Function Assessment (SFA) and Goal Attainment Scaling (GAS) were used as measures to describe the outcomes that 296 students with disabilities from 26 states.
